AM vs RF: Which Security System Does Your Store Need?
Almost every anti-theft system in a small store uses one of two technologies. Your towers, tags and labels all have to match, so this is the first thing to settle before you buy anything.
The two kinds
- RF (radio frequency), 8.2 MHz. The frequency Checkpoint systems use. Common in clothing stores, pharmacies and grocery stores. Paper labels are thin, flat and inexpensive, and a deactivation pad at the register switches them off.
- AM (acousto-magnetic), 58 kHz. The frequency Sensormatic systems use. Generally chosen for wider entrances and for stores with a lot of metal near the door. AM labels are small raised plastic strips rather than flat stickers.
An 8.2 MHz tag will not set off 58 kHz towers, and the other way round. Mixing them is the most common mistake we see.
How to tell which one you already have
- Look at a label. RF labels are flat stickers, often 1 1/2" or 2" square, with a printed coil on the back. AM labels are rigid, slightly raised strips about 1 3/4" long.
- Look at the towers. The model name or a sticker on the base usually gives the frequency.
- Look at what your suppliers send. If merchandise arrives already tagged, buying the same frequency means you don't have to re-tag it.
Which should a new store choose?
- Match whatever your suppliers already tag with, if they tag at all.
- Measure your entrance. Most of our RF systems protect a 3 to 6 foot doorway; very wide openings may call for AM or an overhead system.
- Check for metal near the door, such as metal frames, racks or a checkout counter close by. Tell us about it when you ask for a quote.
