With all the rain we usually get in April, you might consider having a couple of larger umbrellas to help elderly and cherished customers to their cars. Another idea is to have door mats to pick up the extra moisture so no one slips.

In this issue of the newsletter look for:
*Tips on stopping false alarms
*Some insight on shoplifter tricks
*What to do if you are getting lanyards cut off
*How someday security towers may be able to help screen for cancer

Robotics Competition shows how someday security gates could be used to screen for cancer in crowds.

The students at Somerset High School competed in the TCEA state robotics competition held in Houston Texas with the help of a security tower from Sensortags.com. The students were asked to come up with any invention that used the Lego NXT brick and sensors to complete a task or objective.

This team used the security sensor to demonstrate how current cancer detection research could be combined with a sensor unit that is commonly available to help screen for cancer, because early detection is the best measure of prevention. Current cancer detection can be done with a small sample of cells and in less than two hours. The students proposed refining that research and combining it with the gate technology to create cancer screening.

The gates would be used for mass screening and for private screening. Mass screening would occur at places like sporting events; where as the large groups exit, the alarm sounds if one (or more) people's test strip indicates a possible positive test result. The people could then go to the private screener outside and check again discreetly with the unit that would only display a message on the screen. Sensortags.com sends congratulations to the team for such innovative thinking and in placing 30th in the state.

What to do if shoplifters are cutting your lanyards.

Some stores lately have had issues with shoplifters cutting the lanyards on certain items. Here are some tricks you can use to help with that problem.

1. Use a longer pin. Just pin the tag to the item by ordering extra long pins. For example through the eyelet of tennis shoes or through the hole in belts. This is more secure than a lanyard.

2. Use a different lanyard. There are pin lanyards that usually get defeated where the pin is attached. Ball end lanyards are more secure, as are the really thick lanyards that are harder to cut, & P clamps which, if the correct size is used, is harder to cut.

3. Use a different tag. Try an eyeglass tag on jewelry items that the thieves have removed your tags.

4. Double tag your items. Use a paper label up inside garments. When the thief takes the hard tag off and heads to the door, the label will still ring the system.

I hope this sparks some good ideas to help you with those targeted items in your store. If you have a particular shoplifting issue to solve that this does not address, please call and let's discuss it.

Stop False Alarms

Most towers need to be 18 to 24 inches away from the metal door frames. If not they will false alarm and also not ring tags as well as they should. Sometimes when the floors are cleaned, these towers get moved up too close to the door. A good idea is to put masking tape on the floor under the baseplate at the edge farthest into the store. If the masking tape starts to show then the tower has been moved forward.

Clear Ink Tags

Use these clear ink tags as a pin into your security tags as double protection. Can also be used with a bubble backer to hold them onto items that sit too close to the tower and can not be tagged with regular alarming tags.

Shoplifting Tricks of the Trade

1. Shoplifters will work in pairs or teams to distract the cashier while the other one steals your merchandise. Watch out for over friendly customers who are distracting your cashiers.

2. Shoplifters will take a handful of items off of your displays, pretending to look at them and put them back. They will pick up 4, put 3 back and slip one into their pocket. Watch for people who are picking up lots of items at a time. They generally target un-tagged items.

3. One shoplifter will gather items and place them all in one place in the store then walk out while his partner comes in scoops them all into a bag and walks out. Sometimes they will use a booster bag (foil lined) to defeat your towers. Watch for customers entering with large bags from other stores. Consider a bag check shelf behind the cashier's desk. When someone comes in with a large bag, ask them to check it behind the counter. A real shopper will be glad to lighten the load while shopping in your store.
